Louis Olmo, 22, was arrested in an apartment on Birch Park Circle in West Springfield on Thursday, May 11, authorities said.

Investigators responded to the 100 block of Belmont Avenue on April 12 after they received reports of two gunshot victims, police said. They found an adult woman with a non-life-threatening bullet wound, and paramedics took her to Baystate Medical Center.

Olmo was also taken to Baystate with serious injuries. Police seized a firearm from him while he was there.

An investigation showed Olmo shot himself and the woman with that gun by mistake when he used the weapon while trying to rape her, authorities said.

Olmo is charged with:

  • Discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building
  • Assault & battery with a dangerous weapon
  • Assault to rape
